Leonardo, yes, very good point. It would be very difficult to properly reorient individual simple patterns in between a set of points occupying variable positions. So, in most cases, I would probably go for inependently designed, fixed combinations of simpler patterns (which will not get subsequently adapted in different settings).

Tim, I much appreciate the SVG idea. I hadn't thought of this approach at all. I'll proceed to think this over, very interesting suggestion. Thank you also for the very helpful links and code example, much appreciated material.
